Bing and Bong are two white furry creatures (Bing is big in size and resembles an amiable yeti, Bong is his smaller six-legged sidekick, somewhat like a cross between a tarantula and a poodle) who live on a planet with an apparently icy climate. Tiny Planets follows Bing and Bong on their adventures in the Tiny Universe.

There are 65 five minute episodes, sometimes packeged as 16 thirty minute editions. The episodes are quick 5-minute snippets designed to cater to pre-schoolers' short attention span. Both the show and its interactive website won a BAFTA award in 2001. The resulting project, Produced by Richard Morss, was screened in 17 global territories with its characters used in promotions by Nestle and McDonalds. Strong character designs, the work of Ed Taylor, caught the eye of the late Nina Elias-Bamberger at Sesame Workshop (who developed Dragon Tales and other children's shows). The concept was created by the in-house creative team at Peppers Ghost: Andy Park (former commissioning editor at the BBC and Channel 4), Richard Davis and Antony Hatfield (who went on to work as Head Writer and Development Executive on the show). The episodes are short and sweet, gently driving home a point, book-ended by a nifty bubblegum pop theme song (by Kim Goody & Alan Coates). Bing and Bong set out on their next adventure. Afraid of the dark, Bong uses the glowing locals as a natural night light - and encourages the kids at home to brave nighttime darkness.Īn alien, yet child-like look at the world. In "Night Light Sleep Tight," Bing & Bong go camping on a small asteroid. In "Patterns On Parade," Bing and Bong identify color patterns and shapes - which leads to a pageant of space creatures (called "Flockers" on this show), who go into a delightful Busby Berkeley musical number. The simple educational premises give the animators plenty to work with. That universe is made up of seven unique worlds, each created with great imagination: The Planet of Nature, Planet of Technology, Planet of Self, Planet of Light & Color, Planet of Sound, Planet of Stuff and the Home Planet. The only voice we hear is from Halley, an all-knowing young female who is always on the lookout for ways Bing and Bong can help the inhabitants of the Tiny Planet Universe. Both communicate through actions, in pantomime, without dialogue.īing and Bong meet up with unique space creatures in their quest to help the Tiny Planet Universe. The younger and smaller Bong, who looks like a snowball with pipe cleaner legs, is an impulsive ball of energy. Bing and Bong travel to each planet via a fluffy white couch - attached by a bungee cord to their home base.īing is the larger, older 'Abominable snowman' character who puts much thought into every situation. The visuals are simple, alien, yet totally familiar to a child's view of the world. Pepper's Ghost has the opportunity to create new creatures and different worlds for each situation. And each episode has a small message which invites children to solve problems on their own, stimulates a sense of self-discovery and encourages greater self-confidence.
